Arapaho Thunderbird hair ornament (museum replica)

The Battle of Washita River (Battle of the Washita) occurred on November 27th, 1868 when Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer’s 7th U.S. Cavalry attacked Black Kettle’s Cheyenne village on the Washita River (near present day Cheyenne, Oklahoma)

This ornament was made for an old Civil War cap from the Battle of Washita. The cap has been decorated using Cheyenne bead colors and other items from that period (see Civil War cap - right)
