This attractive polychrome pot is decorated in a classic Acoma design. The pot itself has nice solid walls and is nicely shaped, and would look just fine placed next to traditional pottery of past generations. NUMBER ONE - POT BY ERNA "BROOM FLOWER" CHOSA.

She is a member of the sun clan, born in 1959. Half Hopi/Tewa and half Jemez she learned to pot from her Hopi grandmother Sarah Collateta. Her pottery is hand coiled and fired outdoors. A sharp eye will detect the influence of both her Hopi/Tewa and Jemez heritage. It has traditional Hopi designs; however, the colors are slightly muted befitting her Jemez heritage. Traditional Hopi pottery is by its very nature not perfect. Under very close inspection most pots will have some imperfections from stone polishing and firing. Even the best pieces have slight asymmetrical aspects from hand coiling. Potters apply natural pigment paints with yucca brushes. Consequently, variations in design, application and uniformity are present. These factors give traditional Hopi pottery its spirit and value.
