Hopi Bowl Baskets

Yucca is one of the most widely used native plants.  The long leaves are gathered in the summer and bleached in the sun, usually until they are white.  The yucca leaves are then cut very fine, and the Hopis will use a bundle of them for the foundation.

The basket makers use natural, bleached, or dyed yucca strands.  Designs in coiled basketry include geometric shapes, kachinas, animals, whirlwinds, floral and star themes.  Pigments between 1890 and 1920 were aniline, while pre-1890 and post 1920 are predominately natural.  Native colours were black, brown, yellow, red, and white.  Today, aniline orange, green, dark blue, dark red, black and yellow are common.
